Happy Tails

Zoey formerly Zoe

Amy Gowertz - Thursday, February 09, 2017

We brought Zoe home on July 2, 2016.  (We renamed her Zoey, with a Y!)

Zoey had been brought to Calgary from LA at the end of June and lived with her foster mom in Calgary for about 6 days.  We don’t quite know how old Zoey is, but we decided that her one year birthday would be on November 1, 2016.

The first few weeks with Zoey were a little chaotic.  Although she isn’t a huge dog, at 37 lbs now, she is the largest dog we’ve ever had.  She already knew how to “Sit” and she learned “Shake A Paw” and “Stay,” each in one evening.  She wasn’t quite house trained and was FULL of energy!  She liked to jump up on people and needed to learn some manners. We also noticed that she wasn’t fond of men and liked to sleep in corners of the house where she could sort of curl up into the walls.  We quickly enrolled in obedience classes and learned some useful training tips.

Here we are 6 months later and Zoey is a completely different dog!  She loves her walks, and car rides, and playing in the park.  After a long walk, she loves snoozing on her pillow in front of the fireplace. She rarely has accidents now and has learned to whine at the door to let us know when she has to go outside.  She has been on 3 airplane trips to Winnipeg and is SO good on the flights.  She flies in her kennel in the hold.  We are glad that we worked with her and taught her to see her kennel as her safe place. After a few weeks of whimpering at night, she gradually started going into her kennel on her own.  Now when we say “bedtime,” she races into her kennel, waits for her treat, then curls up and goes to sleep.  (She snores like a bear!)

Zoey has definitely been a project and we just love her funny little personality.  She’s full of love and kisses, mixed with a little mischief.  She loves people (though she still barks at men with loud voices) and has been quite gentle around children.  She loves playing with other dogs at the park (or sometimes she can become so focused on chasing her ball that she just ignores other dogs).  We are still working on some basic commands like “Come,” as she gets easily distracted by birds, squirrels and rabbits.  We’re slowly getting there, though.

I just knew Zoey (Zoe) was meant to be our dog when I saw the initial picture of “Zoe the 30 pound Schnoodle” on your website!  She has settled into our family and we couldn’t imagine our house without her now!

Koodoo now Boog

Amy Gowertz - Thursday, February 09, 2017
We adopted Koodoo, now Boog, and he has made himself right at home. Since his adoption, he has learned to play and happily gives high fives and rolls over for yummy treats. When he came to us, he would cower out of fear. We have been working on building his confidence through interaction with other people and animals. We have seen this wonderful little guy come out of his shell, and is now a very engaged, and confident family member.

He has also seen a dentist for a good teeth cleaning and even sat proudly on santa's lap for a Christmas picture.

Our lives are forever changed as a result of his loving and warm nature. We are so fortunate to have found him.

The Weaver Family

Rai now Chewy

Amy Gowertz - Thursday, February 09, 2017

Chewy here! Use to be known as Rai but because of all my fur my new family called me Chewbacca (even though I’m a GIRL!!!!). I am LOVING life with my new family, especially my grandma, I may like her more than my new mom. At first I was a little scared and timid but after a haircut that left me looking nice and polished I had a new attitude and gained a ton of confidence! Now you can’t stop me!

I LOVE to be cuddled and to go for walks, although I have selective hearing and I don’t always behave. The dog park by my house and Nose Hill are my favorite places to go and I get to run and sniff all the dogs that walk by. Grandmas dog Clarice has really taken me under her wing and shown me the way of the dogs, especially barking at the mailman! She’s my best friend and I love to follow her where ever she goes, even out the dog door!

This Christmas I was spoiled with a new leash and a bunch of toys! Mom even got me and Clarice matching hats, which we hated! And that white stuff on the ground is AWESOME! I love winter and playing in the snow, even if it is for a little bit as I get cold and snow balls in my fur.

I am in love with my new family and I can’t get enough of them. My new furever home is the best and I am so happy I fit perfectly with my new family!

 Chow for now!

Cookie 2016

Amy Gowertz - Thursday, February 09, 2017
After a brief adjustment period, Cookie's really become part of the family.  The terrified little dog that was scared of her own shadow has disappeared, and will now plays with new people and dogs with the confidence of a German Shepherd (misplaced confidence; she's forgotten that she's only 8 lbs.  But she's definitely enjoying herself)

She spends most of her day cuddling or playing with the kids and our other pets.  We couldn't be happier with her and would like to thank Little Mutts for bringing her into our lives.
