In September 2013 we adopted a Little Mutt named Spike and we subsequently left the Calgary area for work in Northwestern Ontario. It’s a little lonely way up north for little dogs and we always felt guilty leaving Spike while we went to work so we thought it was time to rescue another Little Mutt and began searching in about September of 2014. By November we heard of some dogs being rescued from California and we agonized over each picture and spoke with Little Mutts representatives who helped us decide on our new addition. Chester has at least one brother left in Calgary (formerly Ichabod) that I can remember and hopefully we can get them together someday.
We arrived in Calgary on December 23 and picked up our new addition at Pat and Steve’s house (Foster family extraordinaire) on the morning of December 27 for our three day drive back to Red Lake Ontario. Chester and Spike met for the first time that day and have been playing and wrestling ever since. Chester, we were happy to find out, was pee pad trained. A blessing when you live in an area where the temperatures dip to minus 40 for months at a time. We had him DNA tested and turns out he is equal parts Chihuahua, Papillion and Basenji. He has many Basenji traits… most of all, he’s a chewer! We have learned not to leave anything valuable around where he can get his chewy teeth into it. But we can never be mad at him.. he just curls up and gives love and plays and chews!
Finally, the most recent update to Chester's exploits is the fact that we are moving back to Alberta in a few weeks and we will be able to get involved with Little Mutts again! These guys really miss being able to play with other little dogs!
Thanks Little Mutts for our pint sized packages of fun!
