When Homer first joined our household, he was a very shy boy. The first day, he spent a great deal of time in our foyer, before he was finally brave enough to begin exploring the rest of the house. Feeding him for the first few days was also a challenge, as he had to be coaxed to his dish and would eat very slowly, only a few pieces of kibble at a time. Walks were also a challenge, as every noise and passerby seemed to startle him. Since then, however, we have seen a gradual (and remarkable) change in him. Homer has definitely come out of his shell and become much less fearful. He enjoys his walks (although the snow poses a bit of a challenge), gets extremely excited for his feedings, and has become quite the little cuddle bug. He loves to snuggle up with us on the couch, and sneaks under the covers at night. During the day, he has the run of the house, and we are pleased to report that no shoes or furniture have become casualties (yet!) While he is still somewhat shy around new people and animals, he definitely seems to have adjusted to his new surroundings.
Welcoming a rescue dog into our home has been an extremely rewarding experience for my daughter and myself. In fact, we are considering adding another Little Mutt to our household in the near future, not only as a companion for Homer, but as another animal for us to love. We would definitely encourage other potential adopters to consider adopting a rescue dog. The love we have shown to Homer has been more than returned to us!
