PARIS (now AMBER) and CUBBY (now CHLOE)
In 2010 I adopted a little guy named Tino from Little Mutts. Sadly we only had him for two years when he developed a rare form of skin cancer. Six months after losing him, I decided I would try fostering. When the photos of the next group of dogs coming from Texas appeared on Little Mutts’ website, I was immediately drawn to a little terrier mix named Cubby. I picked her to foster and while waiting for her to arrive, I knew that I would end up keeping her. Then a few days before she was to arrive, I was informed she wasn’t coming. They were sending another terrier mix named Paris in her place and asked if I would foster her. I did, and by the second day I knew she was going to be a permanent member of our family.
A month later I received an email saying that Cubby was now coming to Calgary and was I still interested in fostering her. Of course I was. The day before she arrived, I was informed that an application for her adoption had already been approved. I knew that the next few days were going to be difficult and told myself that she just wasn’t meant to be mine. I took her to meet her new family, hoping it wouldn’t be the right home for her, or maybe they wouldn’t like her. But they were absolutely wonderful and immediately fell in love with her. She was with us for three days before going to her new home and we were very sad to see her go. She and Paris had become instant friends, playing for hours and then curling up together for a nap.
After a week with her new family, I received an email from them that unfortunately they were very allergic to her and would I be able to take her back. Within minutes I was on my way to pick her up. It was my birthday and I couldn’t think of a better gift.
Paris is now Amber, named after her beautiful eyes, and Cubby is now Chloe, a more feminine name, as everyone assumed she was a boy. They are just the most wonderful little dogs and provide us with so much enjoyment. They are always doing something to make us laugh.
During the first couple of months there were a few issues with housetraining and not coming when called, but that was only because they’d never had any training and didn’t know any better. Amber is extremely intelligent and really wants to please you, so training her was a breeze. Chloe was a little slower to learn, but as Amber had already been here for a month, she was a great role model for her.
If anyone is considering a rescue dog, don’t let “not housetrained” stop you from adopting. With a little time, effort and patience they will learn. And they are so worth it.
We are so thankful to Little Mutts for the amazing work they do. Amy was there to support and comfort us during Tino’s illness. They really do care about their dogs and I highly recommend them.
Paris has the floppy ears and Cubby’s are stand up.
